Happy Holidays from CHPV!
Chicago Hyde Park Village wishes you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday season! |
I am delighted, honored, and humbled to share that CHPV has reached its goal for the Elizabeth Louise Smith Fund's $25,000 matching challenge grant. But we still have a way to go to reach our overall annual fundraising goal. We are 95% of the way. With your help, I'm confident CHPV can reach our goal!
| More and more older South Siders rely on the services, support, and socialization of Chicago Hyde Park Village to age healthfully in community. Nearly half of CHPV’s revenue depends on individual gifts like yours. With your help, CHPV can grow its ability to support the needs of our aging population.
Please help CHPV close our 10th anniversary year strong by donating today. With your support, you’re making a difference in the lives of our neighbors.
With my sincerest thanks,
Lucas Livingston, Executive Director
| P.S. Support for CHPV's Free Yoga Class will also help meet our $25,000 matching challenge. | Dear CHPV Community,
It is with mixed emotions that we announce the departure of Dorothy Pytel from her staff role at Chicago Hyde Park Village at the end of this year. Dorothy has been an invaluable part of the CHPV team, bringing her unwavering dedication, compassion, and creativity to every aspect of her work.
Her contributions to our mission of fostering a “neighbors helping neighbors” community have been nothing short of extraordinary. Whether it was connecting volunteers with those in need, organizing engaging programs, or offering her warm support to members and staff alike, Dorothy’s presence has left an indelible mark on all of us.
While our regular interactions with Dorothy will change, they will not end. I am pleased to share that she will transition to a volunteer role at CHPV to serve us in our development and fundraising efforts. So some of you may continue to enjoy working closely with her.
As she embarks on her next chapter, we express our deepest gratitude for her service and wish her every success in her future endeavors. Dorothy is and will always be a cherished member of the CHPV family.
With heartfelt thanks,
Lucas Livingston | CHPV staff are working limited hours over the holiday season. Please plan ahead and place your service requests early. Our office will be closed December 25 and January 1.

CHPV member and author Pamela D. Toler joins us to discuss her newly published book The Dragon from Chicago: The Untold Story of an American Reporter in Nazi Germany.
| | | For fans of unheralded women’s stories, The Dragon from Chicago provides a captivating look at Sigrid Schultz—one of the earliest reporters to warn Americans of the rising threat of the Nazi regime.
“No other American correspondent in Berlin knew so much of what was going on behind the scene as did Sigrid Schultz.” — William L. Shirer, author of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich
We are facing an alarming upsurge in the spread of misinformation and attempts by powerful figures to discredit facts so they can seize control of narratives. These are threats American journalist Sigrid Schultz knew all too well. The Chicago Tribune's Berlin bureau chief and primary foreign correspondent for Central Europe from 1925 to January 1941, Schultz witnessed Hitler’s rise to power and was one of the first reporters—male or female—to warn American readers of the growing dangers of Nazism.
In The Dragon From Chicago, Pamela D. Toler draws on extensive archival research to unearth the largely forgotten story of Schultz’s years spent courageously reporting the news from Berlin, from the revolts of 1919 through the Nazi rise to power and Allied air raids over Berlin in 1941. At a time when women reporters rarely wrote front-page stories and her male colleagues saw a powerful unmarried woman as a “freak,” Schultz pulled back the curtain on how the Nazis misreported the news to their own people, and how they attempted to control the foreign press through bribery and threats.
Sharp and enlightening, Schultz’s story provides a powerful example for how we can reclaim truth in an era marked by the spread of disinformation and claims of “fake news.” | New StrongerMemory Class!
