| | | | June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month
The origins of LGBTQ+ Pride Month started with the Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan on June 28th, 1969. This was a tipping point for the community when Stonewall was raided by police and the people started fighting back. What was known by police as "riots" (to justify their use of force) or better known as a rebellion by Stonewall veterans spread over the course of six days and changed the course of LGBTQ+ activism. While historians note that Stonewall was not the first uprising against police and state brutality, it was widely covered by media outlets and has received much historic attention. Any shift in activism for the LGBTQ+ community that grew from the Stonewall Uprising was mainly for white cisgendered people as well. Society tends to forget about our Trans brothers and sisters and people of color who were at the forefront of the movement. The first Pride Parade took place in New York City in 1970 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.
