What You Want to Know about THC & CBD for Older Adults

Wednesday, April 10, 12–1pm Central via Zoom

Legalization and availability for THC & CBD has increased the popularity of these products among older adults. Products containing THC (main chemical in marijuana) and/or CBD (cannabidiol) have infiltrated the market, including lotions, creams, smoothies, coffee, and alcohol. However, research on their benefits and adverse side effects in this population is in its infancy. Interest in their use for pain management, anxiety, insomnia, diet, etc. bolster the challenges in the lives of older adults. This discussion will cover: the differences and similarities of these products, how route of administration can cause varying effects, talking with your primary health care provider as a starting point, being aware of the side effects, knowing about potential interactions with prescription and over-the-counter drugs, and staying mindful of source and potency. Time is planned to ask your important questions.

OUR SPEAKER

Hanna Molla, PhD is a Staff Scientist in the Human Behavioral Pharmacology Laboratory at the University of Chicago. She completed her PhD in Pharmacology under the mentorship of Dr. Kuei Tseng, where she studied the role of the endocannabinoid system on prefrontal cortical function and the impact of adolescent cannabinoid exposure on prefrontal cortex development. She is in postdoctoral training under the mentorship of Dr. Harriet de Wit and interested in studying the neural and cognitive effects of drug use in humans, with a particular interest in cannabinoids.

CHPV NEWS!

Local author and friend of CHPV Rosellen Brown spoke at our March 27 Lunch Gathering about finding love later in life. Rosellen invites you to contact her if you have an interesting story to tell about what she's calling a “late love” — any kind of meeting or experience occurring in your later years — to be made into fiction for a book she is completing. She is looking for experiences that she can use to spin new stories. You would not be identified or recognizable in the final product. She is simply looking for some intriguing situations to stimulate her own creations. Contact Rosellen at rosellen@rosellenbrown.com and visit her website at https://rosellenbrown.com/.

Please also mark your calendars. Rosellen will join the conversation at our July 10 Zoom Drop-In on "Sex and Relationships as We Age" hosted by board member Margaret Huyck.
