When you or a loved one is diagnosed with a chronic medical condition, not only do you need to prepare medically, you need to prepare legally. This session will address important documents such as Powers of Attorney, Trusts and Wills. And this session will address important questions such as what legal options are available in planning and paying for your long-term care? How can Medicare, Medicaid, long-term care insurance, and personal care contracts maximize your quality of life. Melissa Kallio, JD, leads this discussion. She concentrates her practice in elder law, which includes Medicaid planning and applications, litigation for vulnerable adults against abuse, neglect, and exploitation, and guardianship estates. What’s So Super About SuperAging?

On average memory abilities decline with aging. However, there are some individuals, we call SuperAgers, who seem to resist age related changes in memory. For more than 10 years, Emily Rogalski, PhD, has been leading the Northwestern SuperAging Research Program, which has a goal of identifying genetic, biologic, and psychosocial factors that contribute to living long and living well. At this presentation, she will highlight Northwestern’s contributions to research in this area and its relevance for healthy aging and Alzheimer‘s disease.

We will be joined by Emmy award winning author and journalist Maria Hinojosa, for a discussion of her book Once I Was You: A Memoir of Love and Hate in a Torn America. Maria grew up in Hyde Park and attended Lab School - her book covers those formative years. She later went on to win the Peabody Award for her work as anchor and executive-producer of Latino USA on NPR.
