Strangers on a Train (1951) — Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Inspired by the novel Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith

What begins as a casual conversation between two strangers spirals into a deadly pact in Alfred Hitchcock’s taut noir thriller. When a charismatic psychopath proposes a “crisscross” murder swap to a disinterested tennis star, the line between coincidence and conspiracy becomes fatally thin.

The film draws its tension and twisted logic from Patricia Highsmith’s 1950 debut novel—establishing her trademark themes of moral ambiguity, queer subtext, and the sinister potential of identity.

About the Writer:
Patricia Highsmith (1921–1995) was a trailblazing American novelist known for her psychological thrillers. Her works, including The Talented Mr. Ripley and Carol, often explored themes of duplicity, desire, and the shadowy corners of the self.

This screening is part of “She Wrote the Shadows: Women, Mystery & the Cinematic Mind,” the fall film series from the Silver Screen Society at the Hyde Park Art Center. Films screen the first Friday of every month at 2PM from October through December 2025. This program is designed with older adults (65+) in mind—but all are warmly welcome.
