Transportation for Older Adults in Chicago – CTA, Pace & METRA

12–1pm Central Time

Meeting ID: 240 191 593

Driving represents the freedom to go where you want when you want, and many children look forward to it as a perk of adulthood. Unfortunately, older adults who wish not to drive and/or no longer drive may feel like children again since the freedom they once enjoyed has been taken away. All older adults deserve the right to travel as they please without getting behind the wheel themselves. This discussion will cover public transportation options and resources for older adults in Chicago, making it easy to find safe transportation to travel safely without compromising their own safety or the well-being of others. Topics include: Reduced Fare/Ride Free programs, ADA Paratransit, the Taxi Access Program (TAP), and how to apply for each program in addition to using the Trip Planning function.

"Entertainment Nearby"

This past summer did you go to the movies? Did you catch Wes Anderson’s oblique Asteroid City? Or rollicking, nostalgic Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny? How about the blockbuster biopic Oppenheimer? or the sly fun of Barbie?

If you did see these movies, how long did it take you to get to the theater? Did you pay for parking? How much were your tickets? For many of us, all those matters turn us away from the big screen in favor of our streaming services at home.

But wait! Do you know that a delightful neighborhood theater is only a three-block walk away?

The Harper Theater, 5238 S. Harper, is newly refurbished with cushy recliner seats in four small screening rooms, a spacious lobby, and clean rest rooms. It books lots of films, including first-run favorites like the four above. Most days, films run in the afternoon as well as the evening. Ticket prices vary between $8.50 and $11.50, but on Tuesdays, all tickets are $5 and popcorn only $2. Tickets are available at the door, but you can reserve a seat online if the show is popular and you anticipate a sold-out house.

To check on current and upcoming movie offerings, you can Google Harper Theater, or go online to www.acxcinemas.com and choose Harper Theater from the location drop-down menu.

Nothing like the big screen. Two thumbs up for our neighborhood theater!

Honoring Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance

September 11, 2023
"Today we remember all the heroes who were forged in the hours, days, and years that followed that terrible morning of September 11, 2001 — ordinary Americans who, amidst the terror, smoke, and flames, demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness. ... In honor of all the lives we lost 22 years ago — and in honor of all the heroes who have given their whole souls to the cause of this Nation every moment since — may today not only be observed with solemn remembrance but also with renewal and resolve.  And I invite all Americans to observe this day with service; you can find opportunities to volunteer in your community by visiting americorps.gov/911-day."

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, Sep 15–Oct 15

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year from September 15th to October 15th to celebrate & recognize the contributions of Hispanic-Americans who have influenced and enriched our society today. Along with celebrating the achievements of Hispanic-Americans, the month celebrates the independence of multiple Latin American countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, etc).
Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1988 under President Reagan, it was extended to a month-long celebration.

"National Hispanic Heritage Month is an important reminder of how much strength we draw as a Nation from our immigrant roots and our values as a Nation of immigrants." – The American Presidency Project: Proclamation 10257—National Hispanic Heritage Month, 2021
