LGBTQ+ Identity, Culture, and Allyship with Cierra Balog and Lynne Perryman

Wednesday, August 9
12–1pm Central

Meeting ID: 240191593
Passcode: Lunch
Join via Zoom
How many of us know someone who is part of the LGBTQ+ community? Friends, family, neighbors? How do we make safe spaces for them? What can I do to support people who aren't normally supported by our society? What does it mean to be a good ally? These are a few questions that will be discussed by Cierra Balog and Lynne Perryman during this fireside chat. They will also be discussing the nuances of living with LBGTQ+ identities and what that means to them. Some things you may be able to learn from this event and use moving forward include allyship, understanding and accepting marginalized identities, and knowing when to speak up versus when to listen.

"The Transformation of Argonne: Big Machines for Huge Scientific Advances"

CHPV’s Men’s group recently visited Argonne National Laboratory’s Advanced Photon Source and Aurora exascale supercomputer. As Argonne National Laboratory states, these advancements "will transform how we do science. Combined, they will empower our researchers to make groundbreaking discoveries at unprecedented speeds. No other laboratory has a comparable dynamic duo, each boosting the power of the other. These upgraded user facilities will be key to accelerating the discoveries that drive U.S. prosperity and security."

Pictured above left: Argonne National Laboratory Advanced Photon Source and Aurora exascale supercomputer. Each pair of stacks holds 64 "blades" (a blade being a removable panel approx 2" wide, 18" high and 30" deep). Each blade is "composed of two Intel Xeon Max processors, six Intel Max series GPUs and a unified memory architecture, providing a maximum computing power of 130 teraFLOPS per [blade]. It will have around 10 petabytes of memory and 230 petabytes of storage" [per wikipedia] "capable of 2 billion billion calculations per second" [per Argonne].
