Meeting ID: 240191593
Passcode: Lunch

How many of us know someone who is part of the LGBTQ+ community? Friends, family, neighbors? How do we make safe spaces for them? What can I do to support people who aren't normally supported by our society? What does it mean to be a good ally? These are a few questions that will be discussed by Cierra Balog and Lynne Perryman during this fireside chat. They will also be discussing the nuances of living with LBGTQ+ identities and what that means to them. Some things you may be able to learn from this event and use moving forward include allyship, understanding and accepting marginalized identities, and knowing when to speak up versus when to listen.

In the Community
Chicago Roundtable: Over the Cliff - Push Comes to Shove
Friday, August 4, 8:30-10:30 am Central on Zoom
Provided by Rush University and American Society on Aging

The human services landscape is reliant on federal funding for both sustainability and growth. However, two policy developments currently unfolding threaten these critical services: the conclusion of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding by the end of calendar year 2024, and the passage of the debt ceiling package, which freezes funding levels and limits discretionary funds through fiscal year 2025. These developments pose a significant risk to the ability of organizations to provide critical human services, including services funded by the Older Americans Act.

This ASA Chicagoland Roundtable will provide an opportunity to learn about the current budget situation and will explore the role of advocates within this environment to mitigate the impact of the funding cliff on older adults, their support systems, and human service workers. Elected officials have also been invited to share their perspective and strategy.

Panelist will include:
• Robert Blancato, President of Matz, Blancato Associates, Executive Director of the National Association of Nutrition and Aging Services
• Robyn Golden, Associate Vice President of Social Work and Community Health, RUSH University Medical Center
• Several elected officials and office staff invited

Attendees will:
• Learn about the current budget situation including the structure of the budget discretionary vs. non-discretionary funds
• Understand the current trajectory of the growth of the older adult population and aging funding
• Learn about the perspectives and strategies of key stakeholders, such as elected officials, in relation to the upcoming funding cliff
• Learn about the role of advocates within this uncertain environment and what they can do to support advocacy efforts

Check out the website if you missed a recent ASA Chicagoland Roundtable session.
