Financial fraud targeting older adults has become so prevalent that it has been called the crime of the 21st century. Older adults are thought to have a significant amount of money sitting in their accounts, but it is not just wealthy older adults who are targeted. Low-income older adults are also at risk of financial abuse. Financial scams often go unreported or can be difficult to prosecute, so they are considered a low-risk crime. However, they are devastating to many older adults and can leave them in a very vulnerable position with no way to recoup their losses.

A clinical social worker by profession, one of Joe's leisure pursuits was collecting vintage cameras. In his own words, "My interest in cameras was coincident with an interest in capturing on film Chicago's disappearing commercial graphics. Over more than 30 years, I have tried to preserve the record of how brick walls became the canvas for advertisements that married artistic experimentation and commercial endeavor, typically in walls that would long outlast the way of life they represented. In May of 2019, I published a book, Fading Ads of Chicago, that gathered together these pictures." Joe is survived by many friends and will be greatly missed.
