| Sylvia Straw
August 30, 1945 - June 7, 2023
Friend of CHPV Sylvia Straw, 77, passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughters and niece. Read the obituary here. | | Celebrating Juneteenth!
Today, June 19, we celebrate Juneteenth National Independence Day, a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.
Though the Emancipation Proclamation officially went into effect on January 1st, 1863, many enslaved Americans were not freed until the Union army arrived in the South. This holiday marks the day that General Gordon Granger announced in Galveston, Texas that all enslaved Americans were free — June 19th, 1865.
Juneteenth is a National Holiday. Many credit the efforts of Opal Lee, called the grandmother of Juneteenth, for bringing national attention by walking from Texas to Washington D.C. and encouraging President Joe Biden to sign the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Today marks the second year that Juneteenth has been an official federal holiday.
The Juneteenth celebration started with the freedom of those enslaved in Galveston, Texas, and is now celebrated around the nation. Juneteenth is considered the longest-running African American holiday. In its celebration of freedom, Juneteenth is a day that should be celebrated and recognized by all. We encourage everyone to take a moment to join the conversation, attend a local Juneteenth Celebration, or learn more about the effects and history of slavery.
