Chicago Hyde Park Village (CHPV) is working with the UChicago Service League (UCSL) to relaunch a regular showing of special movies at the Hyde Park Art Center, 5020 S. Cornell Ave. CHPV/UCSL plans to show a film at 1:30 pm on the first Wednesday of every month with light refreshments provided. The first will be Wednesday, December 6, 2023, with the showing of
The Taking of Power by Louis XIV (French:
La prise de pouvoir par Louis XIV), also called
The Rise of Louis XIV, which is a 1966 French television film by the acclaimed Italian film director Roberto Rossellini. 15 years in production, this film is undoubtedly his most striking and successful work among his historic films - and one that resonates today.
The film revolves around the French king Louis XIV's rise to power after the death of his powerful advisor, Cardinal Mazarin. To achieve this political autonomy, Louis deals with his mother and the court nobles, all of whom make the assumption that Mazarin's death will give them more power.
In addition to the political story of the king's grasp of power, the details include the "extraordinary banquet" that comes close to the end. "We watch the dishes being prepared in a kitchen teeming with cooks, we follow the umpteenth platter as it is formally escorted through the corridors and staircases, until it reaches an enormous table, where the king sits alone, dining in front of his whole court."
This film comes from the renowned Criterion Collection and is on loan to CHPV/UCSL by CHPV member Caecilia Hubbard from her library of films.
This program is free of charge. The HP Arts Center is happy to host rent-free and Caecilia Hubbard gives free access to her film collection. We will, however, put out a pot for free-will donations to cover light refreshments and an occasional film rental. We welcome film suggestions and requests for future events. See you at the movies!
