VILLAGE VISITOR SERVICE

Village Visitor Stock PhotoCHPV's Village Visitor service pairs older adults and caring volunteers in the community to share activities and build friendships. These weekly visits generally begin at the residence of the older adult and may transition to other locations based on the interests of the participants. Activities range from a conversation over tea or coffee, a walk to the park or lake, or help dealing with bureaucratic processes. For those with vision loss, the volunteers can read a book or magazine article aloud or assist the older adult by reading their email or snail mail letters.

Who:
Older adults and neighbors in the community who are interested in forming friendships through regularly scheduled visits.

What:
Sharing activities that can build friendships such as a conversation over tea or coffee, a walk to the park, or going shopping together.

When:
Weekly one-hour visits; one year commitment desired (or academic year for students who do not reside in Chicago year round.)

Where:
Visits begin at the residence of the older adult and then transition to other locations based on the interests of the participants.

How:
Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, pass a background check, and attend a training session. Receiving a Village Visitor volunteer is a CHPV member benefit and well worth the annual fee.
