Death can be a challenging topic to discuss. Many wonder why and how to prepare for it. In this presentation, you will hear about what a Death Doula is, why people benefit from the services provided, what a home funeral is, how to explore your legacy and the importance of preserving it. The work of a Death Doula is to assist individuals and families to prepare for end of life. Death Doulas have facilitated life-to-death transitions for both the dying and those left behind in all cultures since ancient times. The role of a Death Doula is to support and honor the wishes of a dying individual.

Services include: Death Education, Consultation on All Aspects of Dying Except Medical, Funeral Arrangements (Traditional, Home, Green Burial), Referrals for Trusts and Wills, Advance Directive, Legacy, Caregiver Assistance, Sitting Vigil with the Dying Person, Obituary Drafting, Grief Counseling, Distribution of Possessions, Financial Inventory, Account Closures, Personal Inventory.

About the Presenter
Patricia (Pat) Bardenett, LCSW is a licensed, clinical, social worker, certified grief and loss specialist and certified death doula. She is coauthor of the workbook, “Peace & Grace at the End, Making Peace with Your Life”. Pat is a principal at Peace & Grace, an organization dedicated to educating and supporting people in accepting and finding meaning in death. Contact her at info@peace-grace.com

In 2016 Pat’s youngest brother Joe had a motorcycle accident that left him in the ICU for 39 days. For fourteen months, until he died, she became his Death Doula, struggling to learn all that was involved in caring for a person and their affairs at the end of life and for the eighteen months after death.

As a social worker for 32 years Pat is in a unique position to offer both clinical expertise and practical guidance around issues of death and dying.
What is the Chicago Area Villages Collaborative?

There are eight “Villages” in the Chicago area, all part of the international Village Movement—grassroots organizations of older adults designed to help people age and thrive in their communities. Each Village reflects its community and leadership. We invite you to contact a Village in your area to learn more about what we do and how you can join.
