Discussing Books About Hyde Park: In collaboration with the Hyde Park Historical Society, this group gathers to discuss books centered around themes especially relevant to Hyde Park and Hyde Parkers. Readers are encouraged to read anything they can find about the topic, and come together to consider various perspectives.
The group meets at 7:30 on the third Monday each month in the Community Room of Treasure Island (downstairs.
Everyone is welcome (even if you aren't prepared!)
Our next book club meeting will be on Monday, October 16, 7:30pm in the lower level meeting room at Treasure Island.  The meeting will be on the life and works of Saul Bellow.  Augie March would be a good place to start. HerzogRavelstein and Dean’s December have Chicago and/or Hyde Park references, but as always, feel free to explore.

On Monday, November 20 we will be joined by Larry Baran, author of The Housewife Loved a Bandit, 2017.  This is a memoir of the adventures of the author's mother set in Hyde Park (Ridgewood Court among other Hyde Park addresses), in the 1950's.
My mother is the only woman to escape from the Sarasota County Jail. That begs the question "What was your ma doing in jail?" In 1953, she left her husband and six kids in the Hyde Park Chicago neighborhood for a 7 month coast-to-coast crime spree. Flo Baran and Bill Gaskell used guile, guts and a gun to support their illicit lifestyle. Their little fun ride together came to a surprising end at a Miami motel. You know, just like a tale of love, adventure and betrayal should.
The Hyde Park Book Club meets on the third Monday of the month, except December, in the lower level meeting room at Treasure Island at 7:30pm.  All are welcome.
