Benefit Concert for Diane "L'il Sax" Ellis

Wednesday, June 14, 7:00pm
Logan Center for the Arts
Performance Hall

100% OF PROCEEDS GO TO DIANE

Diane "L'il Sax" Ellis is an award-winning jazz educator, music teacher and performer. Her musicianship earned her seats in touring bands led by jazz luminaries Sonny Stitt, Jimmy McGriff, and Charles Earland, among others. From 1987-2016, Diane led her own band, Diane Ellis & the Jazzy Ladies, and in 2011, she released the CD, Ms. Magic. During her 23-year teaching tenure, Arthur Dixon Elementary School became the first elementary jazz band to perform at the Chicago Public School (CPS) Annual Band Festival. Diane taught general music classes and directed after-school music programs for more than 650 students providing authentic experiences in music performance and knowledge about music careers. Her students participated in jam sessions sponsored by the Jazz Institute of Chicago (JIC) at the Chicago Cultural Center. She guided rising stars, such as Dixon alumnus, Marquis Hill, first-place winner of the 2014 Thelonious Monk International Trumpet Competition. Last year, during a performance, Diane suffered a devastating hemorrhagic stroke that has left her paralyzed on her left side and no longer able to care for herself. All proceeds from this concert will be used to provide care and needed support for her.
