Over the last year, the release of the Laquan McDonald tape shocked Chicago. It continued a national conversation about the role race played in both law enforcement and legal prosecution. Jamie Kalven and Craig Futterman, an activist and an attorney who pursued the McDonald tape through a Freedom of Information Act filing, will be the scholars in residence during the Rabbi Jacob Weinstein Weekend, April 8th and 9th..
A Clinical Professor of Law at the University of Chicago, Futterman founded the Civil Rights and Police Accountability Project of the Mandel Legal Aid Clinic in 2000. Kalven, a founder of the journalism project the Invisible Institute, is a writer and activist.
“Over the course of the past few years, from the Trayvon Martin shooting to unarmed African-Americans shot by police in Ferguson, MO and Charleston, SC to the Laquan McDonald case, we have seen the disparity in prosecutorial philosophies and law enforcement that appear to be rooted in race. We are honored to have Jamie Kalven and Craig Futterman lead a discussion on this extremely important topic,” stated Rabbi Frederick Reeves
Friday, April 8th at 8:20 PM following services, the speakers will give a talk titled Lessons learned from youth/police encounters on Chicago’s South Side.
