HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DAY OF NOWRUZ!
Tuesday, March 21

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the "International Day of Nowruz" in 2010 in an effort to preserve, develop, and raise awareness about the culture and traditions related to the festival of Nowruz. Falling on the Vernal Equinox, Nowruz, meaning "new day," is an ancestral festivity marking the first day of spring, the new year, and the renewal of nature for an estimated 300 million people around the world including particularly those along the historical Silk Road.

Nowruz includes rituals, ceremonies, and cultural events, as well as the enjoyment of a special meal with loved ones. New clothes are worn, visits are made to family and friends, and gifts — especially for children — are exchanged. Celebrated for over 3000 years in the Balkans, the Black Sea Basin, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East and other regions, Nowruz promotes values of peace and solidarity between generations and within families as well as reconciliation and neighborliness.

Learn more about Nowruz at United Nations and UNESCO.
