Celebrating Kwanzaa!
Today begins the seven-day, pan-African festival of Kwanzaa. During this cultural holiday from December 26 through January 1, millions of people of African descent come together to celebrate family, community, culture and the bonds that tie them together as a people. Each night, families light one of seven candles on a Kinara symbolizing the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Although Kwanzaa has only been around for a few decades, its roots trace back to ancient African harvest celebrations. The name "Kwanzaa" comes from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits." Learn more about the history, context, traditions, and significance of Kwanzaa:

Who is the City For?: Architecture, Equity and the Public Realm in Chicago
with Pulitzer Prize winning author Blair Kamin & acclaimed photographer Lee Bey
| | |
Author Blair Kamin, a past Pulitzer Prize winner for Criticism, and acclaimed photographer Lee Bey will discuss their new book – Who is the City For? Architecture, Equity and the Public Realm in Chicago. Together, they paint a revealing portrait of Chicago that reaches beyond its glamorous downtown and dramatic buildings by renowned architects like Jeanne Gang to its culturally diverse neighborhoods, including modest structures associated with storied figures from the city’s Black history, such as Emmett Till.

Join Chicago Women Take Action Alliance (35 women’s organizations) for the 2023 Chicago Mayoral Forum. Moderated by Carol Marin and Cheryl Corley. Get your questions answered before you go to the polls.
Chicagoans want to know where the Chicago mayoral candidates stand on issues important to women – including reproductive rights, public safety, affordable housing, clean air and water, equity in the workplace and our paychecks, healthcare, education and more.
Chicago is our city and we care deeply about it. Together we must make sure that our women's agenda is every candidate's agenda.
Masks strongly recommended. If you are experiencing Covid-19, flu, or cold symptoms or are not feeling well, please refrain from participating in CHPV in-person activities.

Center for Life and Learning is Fourth Presbyterian Church’s learning community for older adults. Skyline Village Chicago is a virtual community of older adults centered in the Near Northside.
Over 600,000 Chicagoans in a population of 2.9 million are 55 and older. Society has a tendency to structure itself based on an assumption that everyone is young, thereby failing to respond appropriately to the real needs of older persons. This bias is called ageism.
Ageism operates alongside other systems of inequity and oppression—racism, classism, genderism, and ableism. Aging equity requires justice across all areas of people’s lives—housing, education, healthcare, public transportation and social connectors.
We look to the Chicago mayor to dismantle ageist tendencies in all departments of city government, to commit to an innovative and forward-thinking approach to ensure that older Chicagoans are able to thrive in their neighborhoods and communities as they age.
Meet the candidates and hear their views in this important discussion.
