Thanks to our devoted customers and the dedicated farmers and food artisans who bring us the best foods in the region every week, your 61st Street Farmers Market has grown to over 30 vendors and serves an average of 1,200 customers each market day!

Not only that, the 61st Street Farmers Market has also been Illinois' leader in serving a low-income population since 2009! The Market both leads all other markets in the state in SNAP and Double Value Coupon purchases and, thanks to several terrific Market managers, has built a robust year-round food education program for neighboring children and adults:
  • Partnering with Andrew Carnegie Elementary School and Jackson Park Terrace (JPT), over 5 months each year, the Market teaches approximately 180 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders what it means to eat healthfully, which fruits and vegetables grow in our region, how they grow, how to grow them (in the JPT hoop house garden on Stony Island), and how to prepare and enjoy them. In the course of those three years, kids learn a LOT about food and healthy eating.
  • Adults residing in the JPT apartments also have the opportunity to learn to garden and to prepare the foods they grow. The Market provides a master gardener to instruct JPT gardeners in how to care for and harvest their crops, as well as on-site chef demonstrations and tastings.
  • This winter, the Market was also able to offer a series of crockpot cooking classes to JPT residents, helping them to overcome a variety of obstacles to eating healthfully. At the end of the series, our enthusiastic cooks each received a crockpot, chopping knife and two cutting boards to get them crockpot-ing on their own!
As we head into Year 10, we are also deeply grateful to those who have provided the funding to enable the Market to happen and to carry out its programming. We extend a huge THANK YOU! to the United States Department of Agriculture, Illinois Department of Agriculture, The Chicago Community Trust, Searle Funds at The Chicago Community Trust, Leo S. Guthman Fund, Harmony WellCare, Wholesome Wave, City of Chicago, BMO Harris Bank, Harper Court Arts Council, Kraft Foods Foundation, Allen Foundation, American Hospital Association, University of Chicago Medicine, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Naked Juice, CHIditarod Foundation, LISC, LaSalle Bank, Bank of America, and individual donors!

With your help, in Year 10 we aim to increase the 61st Street Farmers Market average weekly customer attendance to 1,300! As we increase our customer base, we ensure that our farmers are making a profit, and we are able also to increase the number and variety of farmers and vendors who sell at the Market. So tell your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, the guy in the street, and anyone else you encounter to join us this Saturday and every Saturday on 61st Street from 9am-2pm

See you at the Market!

Best,
Connie Spreen
